China–EU Rail Freight Trends: Q3 2026 Analysis

The third quarter of 2026 confirms a structural realignment in China–Europe rail freight. Consolidated data from major rail operators and terminals indicate that eastbound volumes (EU→China) grew 18.4% year-on-year to 412,000 TEU, while westbound volumes (China→EU) reached 1.24 million TEU, a more moderate 6.2% increase. The result is a ratio of 3.0:1, the narrowest gap on record. This shift reflects Europe's expanding demand for Chinese automotive components and photovoltaic materials, offset by a softer consumer goods cycle.

Volume Growth and Capacity Corridors

The middle corridor via Kazakhstan maintained its dominant position with 62% of total traffic, while the Trans-Caspian route saw the strongest quarterly expansion at 23% (51,000 TEU), driven by ongoing investments in port handling at Aktau and Baku. Notably, the northern corridor through Russia remained commercially active but carries a larger share of transit cargo requiring parallel customs documentation. Aggregate weekly capacity across all corridors averaged 24,800 TEU, up 9% from Q2, as new dual-locomotive electric services along the Alashankou–Dostyk border crossing raised throughput capacity to 1,200 trains per quarter.

Rates, Transit Times, and Operational Shifts

Average westbound freight rates held steady at USD 4,850 per 40-ft container, a modest 2.1% decrease quarter-on-quarter, as stable diesel prices and improved block-train utilisation offset higher infrastructure surcharges in Poland and Belarus. Eastbound rates, however, fell sharply to USD 2,150 per FEU, a 14% drop, pressure from persistent equipment surpluses in European depots. Transit times improved across the network: the Chengdu–Duisburg corridor recorded the fastest scheduled transit at 12.8 days, while the Xi'an–Hamburg service stabilised at 14.2 days. Given this relative predictability, rail continues to hold a 58% volume share over sea for high-value, time-sensitive cargo in the 8,000–12,000 km band. Forward-looking shippers are increasingly locking in annual contracts with rate escalators tied to border-processing times.
